As his retirement approaches, Rod Hochman, MD, president and CEO of Renton, Wash.-based Providence, is sharing his insights with the next generation of leaders at the health system.
Dr. Hochman will retire at the end of the year, capping a 45-year career in healthcare, including nearly two decades with the Providence family of organizations.
He wrote in a LinkedIn post that he recently met virtually with some of the next generation of leaders at Providence to talk about how healthcare has changed during his career and the path forward.
"I couldn't be prouder of the more than 120,000 caregivers across our family of organizations who make a difference in people's lives every day," Dr. Hochman wrote.
He was asked, "What aspects of your vision and legacy do you hope the next generation of leaders continue carrying forward?"
His answer? "Have courage to look at what we have to do differently."
He also called on the next generation of leaders to "be bold enough to look at new things, challenge the status quo to change healthcare, and keep focused on the fact that we serve people and communities every day."
Providence is a 51-hospital health system with locations across Alaska, California, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas and Washington. Dr. Hochman will transition into a CEO emeritus position, effective Jan. 1, and a search is underway for his successor.
