Christ Hospital, based in Jersey City, N.J., has laid off 50 employees, according to a Jersey Journal report.
Shortly after hospital officials announced the layoffs, local residents rallied outside the non-profit hospital to protest its possible sale to for-profit operator Prime Healthcare, based in Ontario, Calif. Prime has made a bid of $15.7 million for the hospital and asked the state to approve the sale by the end of the year.
Opponents to the impending transaction argue the sale would make Jersey City Medical Center the only non-profit hospital for indigent care. Christ Hospital officials, on the other hand, argue the sale is necessary for the hospital's long-term survival, according to the report.
