A total of 450 CEOs left their posts at U.S.-based companies during the first four months of 2018, which is the highest year-to-date number since 2014 when 460 CEOs departed, according to a report by Challenger, Gray & Christmas, an outplacement and career transitioning firm.
Here are four things to know.
1. In 2017, 392 CEO changes were tracked from January and April. The rise to 450 in 2018 is a 14.8 percent increase.
2. The top reasons for CEOs to leave their posts in the first four months of 2018 included stepping down (135), retirement (132), resignations (60) and taking on a new position (41).
3. While the number of CEO departures across all industries rose year-over-year, hospitals saw a decrease in departures, with only 35 chief executives leaving their organization since Jan. 1, 2018. During the same period in 2017, 48 hospital CEOs left their posts.
4. In addition, the pharmaceutical industry had eight CEO changes in the first four months of 2018.
