Terrence "Terry" Akin, MBA, stepped into his current role as CEO of Greensboro, N.C.-based Cone Health Oct. 1, 2014, but has been a leader in the system since 2009.
Mr. Akin joined Cone Health in 2009 as COO and was named president in 2012. Before joining the health system, he served in progressively responsible senior executive positions at Harris Methodist Fort Worth (Texas) Hospital and Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas, both part of the Arlington-based Texas Health Resources system. Before those roles, Mr. Akin held senior leadership positions at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C.
Mr. Akin also serves in various other leadership capacities. He is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and serves on the board of directors for the North Carolina Hospital Association. He is also chairman of the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce Operating Group and a member of the Greensboro Partnership Board and Executive Committee. Additionally, he co-chairs the "Ready for School, Ready for Life" initiative charged with improving early childhood education and school preparedness.
He holds a master's degree in business administration from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and a master's degree in social work from the University of Pennsylvania.
