Thomas "Tim" Stover, MD, is president and CEO of Akron (Ohio) General Health System. He has led the nonprofit system as CEO for almost three years and in December signed on for three more years.
Dr. Stover has held a variety of other senior leadership positions at Akron, including president of outpatient services, senior vice president of medical affairs, CMO and medical director of care management. He also led the system-owned Akron General Partners Physician Group as president and CMO from 2001 to 2008.
Dr. Stover first joined Akron in 1993 when he approached administrators with an idea to build a health and wellness center. Akron bought out the project and opened the first Akron General Health and Wellness Center in 1996. Dr. Stover was named medical director of the 200,000-square foot facility, which houses a medical fitness program, radiology and lab services, a 24-hour emergency department, physical therapy, sleep center, surgery center and sports medicine center. The system has since built two more health and wellness facilities.
Dr. Stover is committed to promoting wellness and keeping people out of the hospital. During his tenure at Akron, the system has also launched a mobile exam unit and several satellite emergency departments. He even hosted a weekly radio show to discuss current health issues, called "Akron Good Health Hour" from 2005 to 2008.
Before joining Akron, Dr. Stover was a practicing OB/GYN. He served in the U.S. Air Force Medical Corp as a major for six years, from 1976 to 1982.
