David Torchiana, MD, was selected to succeed Gary Gottlieb, MD, as Boston-based Partners HealthCare's CEO in early February. Dr. Torchiana will become the fifth CEO of the system since it was founded in 1994.
Dr. Torchiana's tenure with Partners begins in March. He currently serves as chairman and CEO of the Massachusetts General Physicians Organization, a position he's held since 2003. In this role, he oversees the largest physician group practice in New England, representing more than 2,000 physicians.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Torchiana practiced in the department of surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where he previously completed residencies in general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery as a Harvard medical student. In 1998, he became chief of cardiac surgery at MGH.
Under Dr. Torchiana's leadership, MGH launched the Care Management Program, a three-year demonstration during which time the hospital developed new strategies to improve healthcare delivery for high-risk patients, those with multiple health conditions and chronic disease. The Care Management Program is one of six demonstration projects nationwide. In 2009, the federal government renewed the demonstration, and today, it serves as the cornerstone of Partners' population health management initiative.
