David C. Herman, MD, was named CEO of Duluth, Minn.-based Essentia Health in October 2014. He joined the 17-hospital, 66-clinic system in 2015.
Dr. Herman brings more than 20 years of healthcare leadership to Essentia and plans to continue to practice ophthalmology while serving as the system CEO. He came to the health system from his recent role as CEO of Pinetops, N.C.-based Vidant Health, a $1.5 billion integrated health system comprised of eight hospitals and 70 clinics.
From 1988 to 2011, Dr. Herman served as a professor of ophthalmology at Mayo Clinic and the program director of Mayo's ophthalmology residency program. He has served on Mayo's Clinical Practice Committee, the Mayo Clinic Management Team and on the board of directors for Mayo Clinic Health System.
Dr. Herman earned his medical degree from Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Medical School and completed an ocular immunology and uveitis fellowship at the National Eye Institute, part of Bethesda, Md.-based National Institutes of Health.
