CEO to know: Dr. Candace Johnson of Roswell Park Cancer Institute

In February, Candace Johnson, PhD, was named the first woman president and CEO of the nation's oldest cancer center, Buffalo, N.Y.-based Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

Dr. Johnson has served as interim CEO since November 2014, following the seven-year tenure of CEO Donald Trump, MD. She was also promoted in November to be cancer center director. In this role, she is the principal investigator of the hospital's $19 million cancer center support grant from the National Cancer Institute.

Dr. Johnson previously served as deputy director, chair of the department of pharmacology and therapeutics, the Wallace Family Chair for translational research and a professor of oncology at RCPI.

Before coming to RCPI in 2002, Dr. Johnson served as deputy director of basic research at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. She holds a doctorate in immunology from Ohio State University.

She is a member of the National Institutes of Health Reviewers and has served multiple terms on committees for the National Cancer Institute.
