CEO Sandra Austin: A strategic leader

Veteran strategic management executive Sandra Austin, MPH, became CEO of Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C., in November.

With more than 35 years of healthcare management experience, Ms. Austin has served in a variety of leadership roles. Most recently, she served as managing director of Chicago-based Alvarez & Marsal Healthcare Industry Group, and before that, as chief management officer for the Louisiana State University Interim Public Hospital in New Orleans. She has also held several other strategic leadership positions at large hospitals.

In addition to her executive leadership skills, Ms. Austin is a leader in operations, human resources, asset management, sales, marketing, board relationships, compliance and financial management. She is also recognized for her ability to motivate staff and lead high-performing management teams.

Ms. Austin's appointment at HUH followed the hospital's decision to enter into a management services agreement with Paladin Healthcare in October. The collaboration brought in new senior leaders and hospital managers who are responsible for daily operations under the oversight of a joint Howard University and Paladin Healthcare Management Committee.
