Almost half of all new entrepreneurs are women

The proportion of new business owners that are women and people of color is on the rise, according to a June 23 survey published by human resources company Gusto.

The survey was completed by Gusto in 2022 using its 200,000-strong customer base.

In 2019, only 28 percent of new business owners were women and only 3 percent were Black, but in 2021, 49 percent were women and 9 percent were Black. Around 42 percent of these new businesses in 2021 were focussed on professional services, especially in more tech-focussed areas. Just over one-quarter of new businesses started were in nonprofit, healthcare or education, with 32 percent of these new business owners being female.
