Alabama's Baptist Health System Lays Off 23

Birmingham, Ala.-based Baptist Health System has laid off 23 employees across its four hospitals and its headquarters, according to an AL.com report.

Baptist Health is in the midst of reorganizing support services and nonclinical functions, which in part led to the layoffs. The four-hospital system has also been affected by low Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements, which factored into the workforce reduction and led to additional cost-cutting efforts.

"We are focused on reducing costs associated with medical and office supplies, while pursuing strategies to increase revenue and keep care affordable," Kate Darden, the system's vice president of marketing and communications, told AL.com.
