The National Union of Healthcare Workers, which represents approximately 850 employees at Salinas (Calif.) Valley Memorial Healthcare System, has announced a planned one-day strike on June 21, according to a Californian report.
The employees are protesting the health system's plan to lay off up to 150 workers. NUHW spokesman John Borsos said the union would cancel the strike if SVMH would bargain in good faith and agree to suspend any layoffs until they complete labor negotiations.
SVMH spokeswoman Adrienne Laurent said, "We will continue discussions in an effort to avoid a strike, and we are prepared to negotiate for what is in the best interest of our patients and community," according to the report.
The strike would be the first in SVMH history.
