Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., released plans for 2019 legislation to lower prescription drug prices.
Here are five quick takeaways:
1. The plan would direct the HHS secretary to ensure prices are on par with median prices in Canada, the U.K., France, Germany and Japan.
2. This would reduce median drug prices by about 43 percent across the board, with some brand-name drug prices dropping even more.
3. If drug companies do not comply, the law would authorize the government to override patents and market exclusivities to approve cheaper generic drugs.
4. The proposal could garner support from the Trump administration, as it is similar to a Trump proposal released earlier this year for Medicare Part B covered drugs, according to The Washington Post.
5. Mr. Sanders' proposal, however, is more sweeping than that of President Donald Trump, and would also apply to Americans with employer-sponsored insurance and uninsured patients.
