The following seven hospital and health system layoffs and workforce reductions were covered by Becker's Hospital Review in the last three weeks. They are listed below by number of employees and/or positions affected.
1. MedStar Health to Lay Off 98
MedStar Health, based in Columbia, Md., plans to lay off 98 employees at four hospitals in Maryland: MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital, MedStar Harbor Hospital and MedStar Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore and MedStar Montgomery Medical Center in Olney.
2. St. Joseph Mercy Saline to End Full-Time ER Services, Lay Off 45
St. Joseph Mercy Saline (Mich.) plans to end its full-time emergency services and will lay off roughly 45 employees as a result.
3. UMass Memorial Health Care to Lay Off 40
Worcester, Mass.-based UMass Memorial Health Care plans to lay off about 40 employees, with more cuts on the way soon
4. Corona Regional Lays Off Nurses
Corona (Calif.) Regional Medical Center laid off eight of its 47 licensed vocational nurses and 29 of its 52 nurses' aides.
5. Kenmore Mercy to Close Unit, Affecting 30 Employees
Kenmore (N.Y.) Mercy Hospital is closing a patient care unit Jan. 12, which will affect 30 nurses, nurse aides and unit clerks. Many affected employees can move to other positions within the hospital or its system, Catholic Health System in Buffalo, N.Y.
