Hospital Industry Leader to Know: Gary Newsome of HMA

As president and CEO of Healthcare Management Association, Gary Newsome heads a company primed to expand its influence over hospitals and providers. In early July, he helped HMA acquire a 60 percent controlling interest in three Florida Shands HealthCare hospitals that, combined, total 139 beds and $100 million in annual net revenue.

About the acquisition, Mr. Newsome commented on the excellent position HMA is in to care for and financially nurture the three hospitals. "We are very excited to welcome these three facilities into the Health Management family of hospitals," he said. "[Our] expertise is in the operation of non-urban community hospitals. We believe these three hospitals offer us the opportunity to apply our proven operating initiatives in the emergency room, physician recruitment and market service development to improve efficiency, quality and access to care."

It's no wonder Mr. Newsome has had success leading HMA for the past two years: he has worked for the company before and knows how it operates. From 1993 to 1998, he worked as divisional vice president, assistant vice president and operations and group operations vice president. He left HMA in 1998 for a 10-year stint at Community Health Systems, where he served as group vice president and then division president for hospitals in Illinois, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and West Virginia.

In early June, HMA named a new CIO, and Mr. Newsome commented to Becker's Hospital Review that the company's choice, Ken Chatfield, is ideal considering the current emphasis on EMR implementation. "Information technology in healthcare is becoming an even more important component to our operations, and Ken has spent his career integrating systems, advancing technology across all spectrums of operations and developing successful customer service centered solutions," he said.

Mr. Newsome began his career in hospital operations with Humana. He received his MBA from Butler University in Indianapolis and completed advanced studies at the University of Michigan School of Business.
