George W. Dawson, president and CEO of Lynchburg, Va.-based Centra Health, has announced his plans to retire by the end of 2011, according to a Centra news release.
Mr. Dawson was selected to lead Centra in 1986 and has since led the non-profit's transformation from two community hospitals to a major healthcare system nationally recognized for quality and safety. Today, Centra has approximately 6,000 employees, a medical staff of more than 400 and three hospitals.
The Centra board has appointed a search committee and engaged an executive search firm to identify candidates as Mr. Dawson's successor.
