WellPoint Partners With IU Simon Cancer Center to Use Watson

WellPoint announced a collaboration with the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center in Indianapolis to develop healthcare solutions in oncology using IBM Watson.

IBM Watson is a computer system that can respond to inquiries posed in natural language and learn from its responses. WellPoint aims for this technology to support physicians in evaluating evidence-based cancer treatment options, thus improving the quality of care.

IU Simon Cancer Center will provide clinical expertise to build Watson's database of information, which is also based on scientific and healthcare data. The cancer center will recommend clinical content and help evaluate and test specific tools. The center will also work with its informatics partner, the Regenstrief Institute, and WellPoint's clinical experts to determine how to optimize the use of Watson in a clinical environment.

IU Simon Cancer Center will be among the first organizations to pilot WellPoint's healthcare solutions, which the company may release later this year, according to the release.
