Summa Health Receives $4M Donation for Hybrid Cardiovascular OR

Akron, Ohio-based Summa Health System's cardiovascular institute has received a $4 million donation from Richard M. and Yvonne Hamlin for the construction of a specialized cardiovascular operating room, according to a report from the Akron Beacon.

The operating room will be complete in spring 2014 and will offer hybrid surgeries that combine traditional heart procedures with cardiac catheterization in order to perform major procedures while avoiding large incisions.

In addition, Summa Health System will offer a cardiology fellowship at the institute starting in July 2014.

Summa's president and CEO, Thomas J. Strauss, estimated that 1,000 people who would otherwise have to leave the Akron area for treatment can now find care at Summa's new center.
