Predicted Hospital Costs for 10 Cardiovascular Conditions, Procedures

The Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project has released a report (pdf) on projected costs and outcomes for cardiovascular/cerebrovascular conditions and procedures for 2011 to 2012.

The report, "HCUP Projections: Cardiovascular/Cerebrovascular Conditions and Procedures 2011 to 2012" was issued by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. The projected costs are based on State Inpatient Databases, which include data from 46 states from 2001 to 2010, and early 2011 data from 10 HCUP states. HCUP used the Gross Domestic Product price index to determine the equivalent of costs in 2001 to costs in 2010.

Here is a breakdown of projected costs for 10 cardiovascular and cerebrovascular conditions and procedures by the end of 2012:

1. Acute myocardial infarction.
Average hospital cost in 2001: $16,000 (equivalent to $20,000 in 2010)
Average hospital cost in 2010: $21,500
Projected average hospital cost in 2012: $21,500

2. Coronary artery disease and coronary atherosclerosis.
Average hospital cost in 2001: $12,000 (equivalent to $15,000 in 2010)
Average hospital cost in 2010: $19,000
Projected average hospital cost in 2012: $21,000

3. Congestive heart failure.
Average hospital cost in 2001: $7,500 (equivalent to $9,500 in 2010)
Average hospital cost in 2010: $11,500
Projected average hospital cost in 2012: $12,000

4. Stroke and acute cerebrovascular disease.
Average hospital cost in 2001: $9,500 (equivalent to $12,000 in 2010)
Average hospital cost in 2010: $15,000
Projected average hospital cost in 2012: $16,500

5. Atrial fibrillation.
Average hospital cost in 2001: $5,500 (equivalent to $7,000 in 2010)
Average hospital cost in 2010: $8,500
Projected average hospital cost in 2012: $9,500

6. Coronary artery bypass graft.

Average hospital cost in 2001: $29,000 (equivalent to $36,000 in 2010)
Average hospital cost in 2010: $44,000
Projected average hospital cost in 2012: $48,500

7. Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty without stents.

Average hospital cost in 2001: $13,000 (equivalent to $16,000 in 2010)
Average hospital cost in 2010: $25,000
Projected average hospital cost in 2012: $28,000

8. Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty with stents.
Average hospital cost in 2001: $13,000 (equivalent to $16,000 in 2010)
Average hospital cost in 2010: $20,500
Projected average hospital cost in 2012: $23,000

9. Aortic resection.
Average hospital cost in 2001: $26,000 (equivalent to $32,500 in 2010)
Average hospital cost in 2010: $37,500
Projected average hospital cost in 2012: $41,000

10. Carotid endarterectomy.
Average hospital cost in 2001: $9,000 (equivalent to $11,000 in 2010)
