Deborah Heart and Lung Center CEO Calls on Hospital to Partner Instead of Seeking Cardiac Surgery CON

Joseph P. Chirichella, president and CEO of the Deborah Heart and Lung Center in Browns Mills, N.J., wrote a column in PhillyBurbs.com calling on Community Medical Center in Toms River, N.J., to partner with the heart and lung facility instead of seeking a certificate of need for its own cardiac surgery program.

Community Medical Center has been seeking a CON for cardiac surgery for eight years but has not received one. The hospital is located in Ocean County, which has one of the largest senior populations in the state, and wants to offer surgery to provide easier access to this service.

However, Mr. Chirichella says Deborah Heart and Lung Center offers cardiac surgery and is only a short drive away. In his article, he urged the hospital to consider partnering with Deborah and other local facilities instead of spending money on seeking a CON, which, if approved, would require funding for a resource that already exists in the community.

"Everyone wins from a collaborative mentality, and Deborah believes Community Medical should collaborate with its hospital colleagues rather than spend needless money lobbying for its own program," Mr. Chirichella wrote.
