Central Maine Healthcare Collaborates With Mass General for Cancer Care

Central Maine Healthcare in Lewiston is collaborating with Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston for cancer care, according to a Sun Journal report.

The relationship is designed to streamline services and coordinate care for Central Maine patients who must visit MGH for certain services, since some cancer treatments like bone marrow transplants are not offered in Maine. Physicians collaborate to determine which care processes can be delivered at Central Maine facilities and which patients must travel to Boston.

Central Maine and MGH physicians meet monthly to discuss cases, and there are arrangements for MGH's genetic counselors to meet with Central Maine patients in Lewiston.

"We're trying to make the experience more uniform," Nicholette Erickson, a medical oncologist at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, said in the report. "It's been a great collaboration, and we've been very pleased with it."
