Hospital Industry Leader to Know: Dr. Timothy Babineau of Rhode Island Hospital

As president and CEO of Rhode Island Hospital, Timothy Babineau, MD, oversees a 719-bed facility that employs 6,863 staff members and serves as the main teaching hospital of the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. When appointed to the position in 2008, he told The Providence Journal he was drawn to Rhode Island Hospital because it had "all the ingredients" to be one of the best facilities in the country.

He also said he would focus his energy on three driving ideas: clinical excellence and patient safety, patient satisfaction, and employee satisfaction and physician partnerships. "I would like to foster a culture where patients come first and safety and quality is on everyone's mind," he said.

Before coming to Rhode Island Hospital, Dr. Babineau served as chief medical officer at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore. He was also vice chairman of the division of surgery, surgical residency program director and director of the center for minimally invasive surgery at Boston Medical Center. He currently edits the Journal of Surgical Innovation and Research.

Although Dr. Babineau is now a dedicated hospital executive, he also worked as a surgeon at Boston Medical Center before becoming senior vice president and chief medical officer for the University of Maryland Medical Center in 2005. He told The Providence Journal that his experience with surgery gives him a good insight into the perspective of his physicians. "I know what it means to be shoulder to shoulder with frontline caregivers," he said.

Dr. Babineau has been named to Top Doctors in America by Boston Consumers' Checkbook and America's Top Surgeons by Consumer Reports and the Consumers Research Council. He earned his MD at the University of Massachusetts and received a master's degree in business administration from Boston University. He completed his internship and residency at New England Deaconess Hospital as well as a fellowship in surgical nutrition and metabolism.
