Bryan Bohman, MD, is a little impatient — and he likes it that way. As a member of the Stanford Hospital & Clinics medical board, Dr. Bohman said he has to be constantly looking for ways to improve, itching to make his organizations better and more efficient. "You can't just sit there at meetings and say, 'Wow, we're doing great.'," he said in an interview for the Stanford medical staff update. "Where then is the impetus to improve?"
Dr. Bohman said his productive energy comes from the years he spent as an anesthesiologist, where he received rapid feedback on his work and ideas. He has served with the nine-partner Associated Anesthesiologists Medical Group of Palo Alto (Calif.) for 13 years.
The same need for efficiency led Dr. Bohman to help Stanford implement a pneumatic tube system to quickly transport lab samples across the medical center. "We like the human touch," he told Stanford School of Medicine News, "but we don't like the human foot speed."
Dr. Bohman currently serves as the chief of staff of Stanford Hospital & Clinics and the chairman of the Medical Executive Committee at Stanford Hospital. He is the first elected chief of staff of Stanford Hospital and Clinics and was elected by the medical staff in 2008 after serving as medical staff president. He has been with Stanford since arriving as an intern in 1981, when he was originally hoping to pursue a research career.
As a leader of a large, state-of-the-art hospital system, Dr. Bohman knows what Stanford is — and what it isn't. In a statement to his team, Dr. Bohman said that as well-reputed as Stanford is, it needs to work harder to increase patient satisfaction and improve the patient experience. "We are not a low cost hospital and are not likely to be a low cost leader in the new future," he said. "It's thus even more critical that we be a high quality and high satisfaction hospital."
Dr. Bohman earned his MD from the University of Chicago and completed his internal residency and anesthesia residency at Stanford University Hospital.
