West Penn Allegheny Health System Reduces Operating Losses, Reports Net Profit

West Penn Allegheny Health System in Pittsburgh, Pa., has announced an operating loss of $5.2 million in the third quarter (Jan.-March 2010), down $3 million over the prior-year period.

The organization also announced a net profit of $0.2 million for the quarter, compared to a net loss of $5.8 million the prior-year period.

West Penn Allegheny also posted a net profit of $7.2 million in the first nine months of fiscal year 2010, compared to a $27.3 million loss in the year-ago period.

The health system attributed its turnaround to growth in outpatient volumes, strong performance of its community hospitals and a decrease in overall expenses through restructuring.
