Three leading children's hospital associations have signed a letter of understanding to merge, a move that would bring together more than 220 children's hospitals and related institutions, according to a news release by the organizations.
The new organization would combine the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions, the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Child Health Corporation of America.
The merger is intended to give the organizations greater influence on the national stage. "We believe there is strength in numbers and unity of purpose in the emerging healthcare environment; and by working together more seamlessly, effectively and nimbly than we do today, our impact at the national, state and local levels will be greater," Jim Shmerling, president and CEO, The Children's Hospital in Denver, and chair of a joint task force charged with determining the feasibility of a merger, said in the release.
During the due diligence, which is expected to be completed in March 2011, the organizations' leaders will discuss merger details and complete the necessary legal steps to restructure and consolidate the three organizations under a single fiduciary board. The Kansas City and Washington, D.C., offices will continue to serve as the organizations' hubs and programs of each organization will operate as usual during this time.
