Hospital workers at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., claim their health insurance benefits were taken away from hospital administrators who have struggled to make timely payments to its benefit fund, according to a New York Times news report.
The hospital has been undergoing some financial struggles, but it has not taken away employees' health insurance. Rather, the hospital has switched to another health plan, hospital officials said. However, up to 500 nurses, maintenance staff and other employees who are part of a local healthcare workers union, refuted those claims and staged a protest in the hospital lobby, according to the news report.
In light of the protest, union officials said the employees' outcry is not an official, organized strike, according to the news report. A hospital spokesman confirmed the hospital made a $1.4 million payment to the benefits fund, far lower than the expected $4 million monthly payment agreed upon in a collective bargaining agreement with the union.
