S&P: Small Hospitals' Finances Improved in 2009

Operating and balance sheet metrics for small hospitals showed signs of improvement in fiscal 2009, due to steps taken to combat the recession, according to a report overview by Standard and Poor's.

The company's report, "U.S. Not-For-Profit Small Hospitals Move Toward Stability," is based on an analysis of key median ratios for the sector.

"We believe that the sector's response to the recession, which focused on tightening expenses and strengthening service lines, have helped small hospitals improve operating margins," the company said. "This improvement is consistent with our 2010 outlook for the entire health care sector."
