Nurses at D.C.'s Washington Hospital Center Begin Strike

Nurses at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C., are taking part in a one-day strike today in response to stalled contract negotiations, according to a Washington Post report.

The nurses, represented by National Nurses United, have been without a contract since last spring, and the two sides have been unable to agree on a new one due to disputes over wages, benefits and nurse staffing levels.

A hospital representative said that replacement nurses have been brought on and the hospital is operating "smoothly," according to the report.

Striking nurses have said they will return to work Saturday morning, but the hospital has threatened to not allow the nurses back to work until Wednesday because it is required to pay the replacement nurses for 60 hours of work.
