Michigan's Saint Joseph Mercy Designs EDs for Senior Citizens

Saint Joseph Mercy Health System of Michigan is the latest facility to renovate emergency rooms to include designated space for seniors, according to a Detroit News report.

The renovations will better serve aging baby boomers and will help prevent readmissions, which has become imperative. Beginning in 2011, hospitals will be penalized through Medicare reimbursement if Medicare patients are readmitted within 30 days of a hospital discharge.

SJMHS will have eight senior emergency rooms by 2011, following a national trend of senior emergency departments. One of the first hospitals to open a senior ER was Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Md., which renovated its facilities in 2008. This month, a Texas hospital also opened an emergency department for seniors.
