Hospital Authority Calls On Grady to Justify Clinic Closures

The Fulton-DeKalb Hospital Authority, which leases Grady Memorial Hospital to a corporation that operates it, is calling upon to hospital's board to justify its planned closure of two community health clinics, according to an Atlanta Journal-Constitution report.

The Authority will consider the justification as it determines whether the closures violated Grady's lease agreement.

Under the agreement, Grady can make certain service changes without the approval of the Authority if the changes will not negatively impact public health needs, the services are underutilized or provided by other providers or are needed to maintain the hospital's economic viability. Additionally, the lease bars Grady from ceasing indigent or emergency care or closing a major service line without approval from the Authority, according to the report.

A representative of Grady said its lease agreement did not require it notify the Authority of the closures.
