A judge is expected to rule this week whether Lacy Thomas, former CEO of Las Vegas' University Medical Center, will again stand trial on allegations that he steered $10 million in no-bid contracts and sweetheart deals to his friends in Chicago, according to a Las Vegas Review-Journal report.
Mr. Thomas, who is charged with five counts of theft and five counts of misconduct by a public officer, will stand trial June 20 if the judge rules for prosecutors to pursue. The first trial ended in a mistrial last year because Las Vegas police did not share 577 pages of documents with defense attorney Dan Albregts.
Prosecutors allege that contracts UMC awarded to five companies during Mr. Thomas' three-year tenure were unnecessary or duplicative, giving illegal benefits or gains to Mr. Thomas' friends.
Mr. Albregts is seeking dismissal of the charges, contending that the contracts were vetted by county lawyers and approved by the county commission.
