Error Rate Makes Medicare Advantage Ripe for New RAC Program

Medicare Advantage plans have very high payment error rates, making them ripe for the proposed RAC program that will patrol Medicare Parts C and D, according to a report by John Paul Spencer in the RAConteur.

Preliminary CMS data for 2010 put the payment error rate for Medicare Advantage plans at 14.1 percent, well above error rate rates for both Medicaid and traditional Medicare. That amounted to $1.6 billion in erroneous payments by Medicare Advantage plans in 2010.

The comment period for the proposal to create RACs for Medicare Parts C and D just closed but it will likely be several months before CMS releases a proposed rule.
