The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is reminding hospitals, physicians and other providers that they must file all Medicare claims for services furnished on or after Jan 1, no later than one year for the date of service, according to a report by the Healthcare Financial Management Association.
As stipulated by Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, Medicare will deny any claims filed one year after the date of service. Medicare fee-for-service claims with service dates from Oct. 1, 2009, through Dec. 31, 2009, must be filed by Dec. 31, 2010, according to the report.
Claims with service dates from Jan. 1, 2009, to Oct. 1, 2009, keep their original Dec. 31, 2010, deadline for filing.
