Baltimore Hospitals' Construction Project to Boost Employment

Expansion projects at Mercy Medical Center, Johns Hopkins Hospital, Franklin Square Hospital Center and Anne Arundel Medical Center, all in Baltimore, Md., will create hundreds of new jobs within the next few years, according to the Baltimore Business Journal.

The expansions will create jobs for nurses, security guards, mechanics and food service professionals. Maryland hospitals, which already employ 92,000 workers and rank the healthcare industry among the state's largest, could add another 1,000 workers to that total by 2012.

The expansion projects come as a result of out-of-date facilities, increasing demand for services and an industry-wide shift to private patient rooms. Each hospital will add hundreds of thousands of square feet to its existing grounds.
