7 Recent Hospital and Health System Financial Results

Here are seven hospitals or health systems that have recently reported financial results.

1. Despite implemented efforts to contain costs, Doctors Medical Center in Modesto, Calif., posted an even greater operating loss of $15.5 million at the end of 2010, compared to $13.2 million in 2009. The hospital board noted it may have to file for bankruptcy.

2. Southwest Washington Medical Center in Vancouver, Wash., posted nearly $533 million in total revenue for the 12-month period ending Dec. 31, 2010. By comparison, the hospital raked in approximately $495 million for the 12-month period ending Dec. 31, 2009.

3. University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City reached total revenues of $814 million for fiscal year 2011, representing a $75 million increase from last year.

4. North Adams, Mass.-based Northern Berkshire Healthcare has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection due to a staggering overall debt of $49.5 million, mainly from bonds.

5. Orlando (Fla.) Health's total profits increased in the first six months of fiscal year 2010 from $67.9 million to $76.2 million, representing 12 percent growth.

6. Sacramento, Calif.-based Sutter Health has reported $2.33 million in total revenues for the first three months ending March 31, 2011, up slightly from $2.16 million in total revenues for the first three months ending March 31, 2010.

7. Hoffman Estates, Ill.-based Alexian Brothers Health System has posted increased total revenues of $952 million for the 12-month period ending Dec. 31, 2011, compared to $930 million for the same time frame last year.
