All hospitals in Virginia are now required to publish standard prices for all items and services on their website under a state law that took effect July 1.
Hospitals that ignore the new price transparency requirement could face fines from the state.
Virginia passed the new law in March 2022, becoming the first state to enact its own price transparency requirements. Ohio is currently progressing on similar legislation. The federal price transparency rule was implemented in January 2021, which also requires hospitals to post all their prices for services provided online.
In a Health Affairs blog post from CMS leaders in February, the agency said 70 percent of hospitals nationwide are in compliance with the entire federal rule, and 82 percent are in compliance with at least one component of the rule.
