West Virginia health system places CEO on leave

Steve Shattls is on administrative leave as president and CEO of Huntington, W.Va.-based Valley Health Systems, the system confirmed to Becker's via emailed statement.

Employees were notified about the change in leadership earlier this week, according to the statement. Mathew Weimer, MD, Valley Health's vice president of health services and chief medical officer, is listed as interim president and CEO on the organization's website.

"As this is a personnel issue, no further comments will be forthcoming," the statement said.

Mr. Shattls has been with Valley Health nearly since its inception in 1975, according to The Herald-Dispatch.

Valley Health operates more than 40 healthcare facilities in Southern West Virginia, Southeastern Ohio and Eastern Kentucky, according to its website.

"Valley Health's unwavering commitment to uninterrupted, high-quality care remains unchanged," the health system's statement said. "Our mission is to provide quality healthcare to everyone regardless of their ability to pay."
