Robert McDonald confirmed as VA Secretary

The U.S. Senate has unanimously confirmed Robert McDonald, MBA, former head of Procter & Gamble, as Secretary of Veterans Affairs, according to a report from The Washington Post.

The entire process took relatively little time and was hardly contested; President Obama nominated Mr. McDonald for the position June 30, and his confirmation hearing revealed bipartisan support.

Mr. McDonald attended The United States Military Academy at West Point, served in the Army for five years and earned an MBA from the University of Utah, before joining Procter & Gamble, where he eventually worked his way from an entry-level position to chairman, president and CEO of the multinational consumer goods company.

Mr. McDonald replaces acting VA Secretary Sloan Gibson, who assumed the interim leadership after former VA Secretary Erick Shinseki resigned amid revelations of an epidemic of falsified records and treatment delays among VA hospitals nationwide.
