Ousted ECMC CEO takes new leadership role at Ira Davenport Memorial

Ira Davenport Memorial Hospital in Bath, N.Y., has a new leader.

Richard Cleland, who was removed as CEO of Buffalo, N.Y.-based Erie County Medical Center last year, is the administrator of Ira Davenport Memorial and system vice president of post acute services for Elmira, N.Y.-based Arnot Health, which operates Ira Davenport Memorial, along with two other small hospitals and three nursing homes, reports The Buffalo News.

Mr. Cleland told The Buffalo News he joined the system over the summer. He replaced James Watson, who left as Ira Davenport's president and CEO early in 2016.

News of Mr. Cleland's new role comes more than a year after he was removed as CEO of ECMC. At the time, the ECMC board said it had voted to fire Mr. Cleland for cause, according to the report. However, Mr. Cleland contended he was not let go, but rather exercised his right to terminate his employment agreement for cause.

ECMC COO Mary Laski Hoffman, RN, BSN, resigned after Mr. Cleland refused the board's orders to fire her, reports The Buffalo News. That was among the demands the board made of Mr. Cleland if he wanted to continue leading ECMC, the report states.

ECMC appointed Thomas J. Quatroche Jr., PhD, as president and CEO last January.
