Steven M. Safyer, MD, president and CEO of New York City-based Montefiore Medicine, announced his plans to retire.
Five notes:
1. Dr. Safyer will continue to serve in his role until a successor is appointed, he wrote in a letter to employees obtained by Becker's Hospital Review.
2. He has served at the helm of Montefiore since 2008, prior to which he was the organization's senior vice president and CMO.
3. During his tenure, Dr. Safyer oversaw the integration of Montefiore Health System and Albert Einstein College of Medicine to create Montefiore Medicine in 2015.
4. He is a fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine and serves on its board.
5. Dr. Safyer earned his medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine and completed his internship and a residency in social medicine at Montefiore.
"It has been an extraordinary honor to lead this organization," Dr. Safyer wrote in the letter. "I have witnessed thousands of smaller, more personal moments at Montefiore. These interactions are just as bold as cutting-edge cures in dramatically changing, and saving, lives."
