Mackinac Straits Health System CEO to retire, successor chosen

St. Ignace, Mich.-based Mackinac Straits Health System named Karen Cheeseman succeeding CEO to Rodney Nelson.

Here are five things to know about the transition.

1. Mr. Nelson will vacate his position after serving as MSHS CEO for 17 years. He plans to retire in July 2017.

2. Ms. Cheeseman will leave her role as MSHS' COO to become CEO in summer 2017.

3. She has 19 years of management experience, 16 of those years spent with MSHS. She was involved with directing MSHS' affiliation with Munson Healthcare in Traverse City, Mich.  

4. Ms. Cheeseman earned a bachelor's degree in human resource management from Michigan State University in East Lansing and a master's degree in organizational management from Spring Arbor (Mich.) University.    

5. She serves on the Michigan Health and Hospital Association Small and Rural Council.
