Hospital Leader to Know: Kathleen Kinslow, New CEO of Philadelphia's Aria Health

Kathleen Kinslow, current CEO and executive director of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia, will take over as president and CEO of Philadelphia's Aria Health in November.

Ms. Kinslow joined Pennsylvania Hospital in 1992 as director of the school of nurse anesthesia and continued up the management ranks, serving as vice president of clinical services, CNO and COO before becoming CEO and executive director. During her tenure with Pennsylvania Hospital, she drew on her experience as an educator and nurse anesthetist to understand the hospital experience from the patient's point of view.

In April 2009, Ms. Kinslow accompanied a team of 30 physicians, physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners and other clinicians on a trip to Panama to perform hip and knee replacement surgeries for patients in need. She supported the team by working with the patients pre-operatively and said the trip "was an amazing opportunity to see the difference our medical training can make for the world — and to carry the Pennsylvania Hospital banner proudly."

Commenting on Ms. Kinslow's appointment to Aria, health system board chairman George A. Voegele said, "We are [pleased] to welcome Kathleen, who we are confident will bring dynamic energy as well as a strong mix of clinical and healthcare leadership experience to Aria."

Ms. Kinslow echoed Mr. Voegele's enthusiasm, saying, "I am very excited about this opportunity to lead such a great health system. Our focus will be to achieve the highest levels of quality and satisfaction for our patients, physicians and staff."

Ms. Kinslow is a certified registered nurse anesthetist who began her career in nursing. She was honored in 2009 as one of the Top Fifty Business Women in Pennsylvania and holds memberships with the American Hospital Association, the Hospital Association of Pennsylvania, the American Association of Healthcare Executives and other organizations.

Ms. Kinslow holds a master's degree in nursing from Temple University and master's degrees in education and business administration from St. Joseph's University, both in Philadelphia. She also holds a doctorate in education from Widener University in Chester, Pa.
