Duluth, Minn.-based Essentia Health has announced the appointment of David C. Herman, MD, as CEO and member of the board of directors. Dr. Herman will join the organization in early 2015.
Dr. Herman succeeds former CEO Peter E. Person, MD, MBA, who announced his retirement in June after spending 33 years in medicine at Essentia Health.
Dr. Herman has more than 20 years of experience in healthcare leadership. Most recently, he served as the president and CEO of Vidant Health in Greenville, N.C. Prior to that, Dr. Herman served on the Mayo Clinic staff in Rochester, Minn., from 1988 to 2011, during which time he was also a professor of ophthalmology. He currently serves on the board of directors for the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a member of the international board of trustees for the Ronald McDonald House Charities.
Dr. Herman received his medical degree from Mayo Medical School in Rochester, Minn., and completed his residency in ophthalmology at Mayo school of Graduate Medical Education. He has a master's degree in medical management from the University of Texas at Dallas. Dr. Herman is interested in continuing to practice ophthalmology while serving as CEO.
