The Institute of Medicine has selected Victor Dzau, MD, president and CEO of Durham, N.C.-based Duke University Health System, as its next president, effective July 1.
Dr. Dzau is also chancellor for health affairs at Duke University.
He previously served as Hersey Professor of the Theory and Practice of Physic at Harvard Medical School in Boston, chair of the department of medicine and director of research at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, and Arthur Bloomfield Professor and chair of the department of medicine at Stanford (Calif.) University.
He succeeds Harvey Fineburg, who has served as president of IOM for the last twelve years.
"Victor Dzau is an internationally acclaimed leader and scientist whose work has improved health care in the United States and globally. Under his direction, the Institute of Medicine will continue to advance research and improve health by providing objective, evidence-based guidance on critical issues," said Ralph Cicerone, president of the National Academy of Sciences, in the news release.
