Cleveland Clinic names chief medical officer for second-opinions service

David Peter, MD, has been appointed as chief medical officer of The Clinic by Cleveland Clinic — a segment of the health system focused on virtual second opinions.

The Clinic, a joint venture between the health system and Amwell, provides concierge-style virtual care to patients seeking second opinions on new or complex diagnoses and treatment options. The service connects patients with more than 3,500 Cleveland Clinic specialists and subspecialists.

From 2019 to May 2024, Dr. Peter served as vice president and CMO at Cleveland Clinic Indian River in Vero Beach, Fla. During his five years there, he led a team of more than 2,400 employees and 450 physicians and advanced practice providers, overseeing quality improvement projects and the growth of several service lines. He has also practiced emergency medicine for more than 25 years.

At The Clinic, Dr. Peter will be responsible for guiding strategic growth and enhancing clinical excellence, according to a Nov. 19 news release.
