Of the dozens of CEO retirements Becker's reported on in 2024, five executives planned their final days in December.
Some leaders also announced early January retirements, such as Chuck Mantooth, president and CEO of Boone, N.C.-based UNC Health Appalachian, who will retire Jan. 1. Bob Anderson, CEO of Peoria, Ill.-based OSF HealthCare's central region, and Jim Woodward, president and CEO of Philadelphia-based Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic, will also both retire Jan. 3.
Others, like Ron Werft, president and CEO of Santa Barbara, Calif.-based Cottage Health, shared plans to retire in 2025 but did not specify a date.
Below are the retirements rounding out 2024:
1. John Frankovitch, president and CEO of Weirton (W.Va.) Medical Center since 2016, will retire at the end of the year as the hospital prepares to join Morgantown-based West Virginia University Health System. He will serve as president emeritus of the board of trustees and as a strategic advisor to support integration with WVU Medicine.
2. Diane Holder will retire as president and CEO of Pittsburgh-based UPMC Health Plan at the end of the year after a 40-year career at UPMC.
3. Julie Petersen, CEO of Ellensburg, Wash.-based Kittitas Valley Healthcare, will retire at the end of 2024. She joined the system as interim CEO in 2016.
4. Dan DeGroot, president and CEO of Stoughton (Wis.) Health, will retire at the end of the year after a 40-year healthcare career.
5. Kirk Tice, president and CEO of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Rahway (N.J.), shared plans to retire at the end of 2024. Mr. Tice has led the hospital since 1994 and has been with the organization for 46 years.
