40 New Hospital CEOs Named in 2010

Here are 40 notable new hospital CEOs named to the top posts at hospitals and health systems around the country so far this year, organized by the month they were appointed.



January

Bobby Arnold (West Tennessee Healthcare, Jackson, Tenn.). Mr. Arnold was named CEO of West Tennessee in January. He has been with West Tennessee since 1985 and was appointed CFO in 1999.

Gregory Burfitt (Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh). Mr. Burfitt was named CEO of Allegheny General Hospital in January. Previously, he had been a healthcare consultant at BDC Advisors in Miami, and before that he was CEO of Centura Health, the largest integrated healthcare delivery system in Colorado.

Laura Kaiser (Sacred Heart Health System, Pensacola, Fla.). Ms. Kaiser was named the new CEO of Sacred Heart in January. She had served as the health system's COO.

Bob Ladenburger (Exempla Healthcare, Denver). Mr. Ladenburger was named the new president and CEO of Exempla following the health system's administrative takeover by Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Health Systems. Mr. Ladenburger had served as CEO of St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction, Colo., part of the Sisters of Charity system.

Randy White (Fayette Regional Health System, Connersville, Ind).
Mr. White was named CEO of Fayette Regional in January. He had served as the system's interim CEO, and before that as COO.

February

Benjamin Carter (Trinity Health, Novi, Mich.). Mr. Carter was appointed CEO of 44-hospital Trinity Health in February. He previously served as COO of eight-hospital Detroit Medical Center.

Moody L. Chisholm (St. Vincent HealthCare, Jacksonville, Fla.). Mr. Chisholm was named the next president and CEO of St. Vincent in February. Mr. Chisholm most recently served as CEO of Manatee Healthcare System in Bradenton, Fla.

Amy Freeman (Providence Hospital, Washington, D.C.). Providence Hospital appointed Amy Freeman as its new president and CEO in February. She most recently served as executive vice president and senior vice president of patient care services at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore.

Keith Granger (Trinity Medical Center, Birmingham, Ala). Mr. Granger was named the permanent head of Trinity in February after serving as interim CEO for the hospital. Previously, he served as CEO of Dothan, Ala.'s Flowers Hospital.

Jordan Herget (OU Medical Center Edmond, Edmond, Okla.). Mr. Herget was named CEO of OU Medical Center Edmond in February. He previously served as COO at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, a 330-bed facility in Idaho Falls, Idaho.

Gene Michalski (Beaumont Hospitals, Royal Oak, Mich.). Mr. Michalski was named the new CEO of Beaumont Hospitals in February. He had previously served as the COO of the health system.

Sherri Sitarik (Orlando Health, Orlando, Fla.). Orlando Health named Ms. Sitarik as its new president and CEO in February. She had served as the executive vice president, leading strategy development for the health system.

Robert J. Rogalski, JD (Excela Health, Greensburg, Pa.). Mr. Rogalski was named the permanent head of Excela in February. He had been serving as interim CEO for the health system, and prior to that was senior counsel and healthcare practice group co-leader for Thorp Reed & Armstrong.

March

Joan Coffman (St. Joseph's Hospital, Chippewa Falls, Wis.). Ms. Coffman was named CEO of St. Joseph's, part of Hospital Sisters Health System in March. Ms. Coffman has served as COO at St. Joseph's for the past two years.

Robert Nesse, MD (Mayo Health System, Rochester, Minn.). Dr. Nesse was named the new CEO of Mayo Health System in March. He most recently served as CEO of Franciscan Skemp Healthcare-Mayo Health System in La Crosse, Wis., for seven years.

Philip A. Patterson (Bon Secours Charity Health System, Suffern, N.Y.). Mr. Patterson was named CEO of Bon Secours Charity in March. He had been interim CEO for BSCHS and previously was COO for the health system.

Melissa Robson (Prince William Health System, Manassas, Va.). Ms. Robson was named CEO of Novant Health's one-hospital Prince William Health in June. She had served as COO of 268-bed Rowan Regional Medical Center, a Novant hospital in Salisbury, N.C.

April

Daniel Babb. (Oakland Regional Hospital, Southfield, Mich.). Mr. Babb was named CEO of Oakland Regional in April. He most recently served as CFO at Garden City (Mich.) Hospital.

Daniel J. DeBarba Jr. (Norwalk Hospital, Norwalk, Conn.). Mr. DeBarba was named president and CEO of Norwalk in April. He joined the 328-bed hospital as vice president and CFO in 2007.

Dan McKay (Northwest Health System, Springdale, Ark.). Mr. McKay was named as CEO of Northwest Health System in June. He most recently served as vice president of operations for Division IV at Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems.

Richard A. Seidler (Trinity Regional Health System, Fort Dodge, Iowa). Trinity Regional announced Mr. Seidler as its new president and CEO in April. He most recently served as president and CEO of Allen Health System in Waterloo, Iowa.

Todd Steward (South Austin Medical Center, Austin, Texas). Mr. Steward was named CEO of South Austin Medical Center, part of St. David's HealthCare in April. He had previously been CEO of North Suburban Medical Center in Denver, Colo.

May

Robert Bills (Encino Hospital Medical Center & Sherman Oaks Hospital; Encino and Sherman Oaks, Calif.). Mr. Bills was named CEO of 150-bed Encino Hospital Medical Center and 153-bed Sherman Oaks Hospital by Prime Healthcare Services, which owns both hospitals. Mr. Bills previously served as CEO at Valley Presbyterian Hospital in Van Nuys, Calif.

John B. Chessare, MD (Greater Baltimore Medical Center, Towson, Md.). Greater Baltimore Medical Center named Dr. Chessare as its new president and CEO in May. Dr. Chessare, a pediatrician, previously served as president of Caritas Christi Health Care System's Caritas Norwood Hospital, a 264-bed hospital just outside Boston.

Robert Peebles (Mercy Medical Center, Sioux City, Iowa). Mr. Peebles was named CEO of Mercy Medical in May. He had been interim CEO of the hospital before being named to the permanent post.

Michael Schatzlein, MD (Saint Thomas Health Services, Nashville, Tenn). Dr. Schatzlein was named CEO of Ascension Health's four-hospital Saint Thomas Health Services in May. Dr. Schatzlein had been CEO of the six-hospital Lutheran Health Network in Indiana, which is operated by Community Health Systems.

Michael H. Schnieders (Good Samaritan Hospital, Kearney, Neb.). Mr. Schnieders was appointed CEO of Catholic Health Initiatives' Good Samaritan in May. He previously served as executive vice president and administrator of 370-bed Good Samaritan Hospital, an unrelated institution in Suffern, N.Y.

Stan Tatum (St. Mary's Regional Medical Center, Enid, Okla.).
Mr. Tatum was named CEO of St. Mary's Regional in May. He previously served as president and development manager at Baylor Medical Center in McKinney, Texas.



June

William D. Adams (Valley Baptist Health Center, Harlingen, Texas). Valley Baptist named Mr. Adams its new CEO in June. He most recently served as vice president and administrator for Charleston (W.Va.) Area Medical Center's Memorial Hospital.

Michael A. Clark (Logan Regional Hospital, Logan, Utah). Mr. Clark was named the new CEO of Intermountain Healthcare's Logan Regional Hospital in June. He most recently served as the operations officer for the hospital.

E. Kenneth Hutchenrider (Methodist Richardson Medical Center, Richardson, Texas). Mr. Hutchenrider was appointed CEO of Methodist Richardson in June. He had been CEO of 150-bed Galesburg (Ill.) Cottage Hospital.

Tim McManus (Reston Hospital Center, Reston, Va.).
Mr. McManus was named CEO of HCA's Reston Hospital Center in June. He most recently served as CEO of HCA's Garden Park Medical Center in Gulfport, Miss.

John Popovich Jr., MD, (Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit). Dr. Popovich, a pulmonary physician, was appointed president and CEO of 802-bed Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. Dr. Popovich has spent 30 years at Henry Ford Health System, most recently as senior vice president for clinical affairs.

Pat Walz (Yuma Regional Medical Center, Yuma, Ariz.).
Mr. Walz was named the new president and CEO of Yuma Regional in June. He had been serving as interim leader of the hospital since February.



July

Scott Cihak (Columbia Hospital, West Palm Beach, Fla.). Mr. Cihak was has named as Columbia Hospital's new CEO in July. Prior to joining Columbia Hospital, Mr. Cihak was COO of Westside Regional Medical Center in Plantation, Fla.

Ron Paulus, MD (Mission Health System, Asheville, N.C.). Dr. Paulus was named president and CEO of Mission Health System and Mission Hospital, both in Asheville, N.C., in July. He will be the first physician CEO for the health system. 

Megan Perry (Sentara Potomac Hospital, Woodbridge, Va.).
Ms. Perry was promoted to Sentara corporate vice president of Northern Virginia and president of Sentara Potomac Hospital in July. She most recently worked as senior vice president for business and service line development for Sentara Healthcare.

Jodi Schmidt (Labette Health, Parsons, Kan.). Ms. Schmidt was named president and CEO of Labette in early July. She most recently served as vice president and chief development officer of Hays (Kan.) Medical Center.

David Shulkin, MD (Morristown Memorial Hospital, Morristown, N.J.). Dr. Shulkin was named as the new president and CEO of Atlantic Health's Morristown Memorial in July. Dr. Shulkin most recently served as president and CEO of Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City.

Robert Steigmeyer (Community Medical Center, Scranton, Pa.). Mr. Steigmeyer was named CEO of Community Medical Center in July. He was previously senior vice president of operations and finance for the 300-bed Northwest Hospital and Medical Center in Seattle.
