From Bill Rutherford's retirement from HCA Healthcare to Anthony DeFurio moving from Advocate Health to Houston Methodist, here are some of the CFO moves that captured the attention of readers in 2024:
1. Bill Rutherford retired as CFO of Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare after a decade in the role. Mike Marks, who has been with HCA since 1996, assumed the role of executive vice president and CFO on May 1.
2. Alice Pope was appointed executive vice president and CFO of Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Novant Health, effective May 13. Ms. Pope previously served as CFO for Falls Church, Va.-based Inova Health System.
3. Durham, N.C.-based Duke University Health System tapped Lisa Goodlett as CFO in March. Ms. Goodlett joined Duke from MUSC Health in Charleston, S.C., where she served as CFO since 2017.
4. Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins Medicine named Cheryl Sadro senior vice president and CFO in April. Ms. Sadro joined Johns Hopkins from Sacramento, Calif.-based UC Davis Health, where she served as CFO.
5.New York City-based Mount Sinai Health System appointed Vincent Tammaro executive vice president and CFO in October. Mr. Tammaro succeeded Stephen Harvey in the role and previously served as CFO of Columbus, Ohio-based Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and CFO and treasurer of Yale New Haven (Conn.) Health.
6. Mike Allen left his role as CFO of Peoria, Ill.-based OSF HealthCare to become president of the financial services division and CFO of Edison, N.J.-Hackensack Meridian Health. Kristin Largent, senior vice president of financial operations for OSF HealthCare, succeeded Mr. Allen as OSF CFO.
7. Cincinnati-based Bon Secours Mercy Health CFO Debbie Bloomfield, PhD, will retire at the end of 2024 and began transitioning out of the role on July 1. Travis Crum, the health system's senior vice president of finance, took over as CFO on July 1.
8. Doug Watson was named CFO of Minneapolis-based Allina Health in May after serving as the system's interim finance executive since January. Mr. Watson succeeded Ric Magnuson as CFO and previously served as CFO for San Diego-based Sharp HealthCare, West Des Moines, Iowa-based UnityPoint Health and the southwest division of Chicago-based CommonSpirit.
9. Hampton Roads, Va.-based Sentara Health CFO Robert Broermann will retire in April 2025. Mr. Broermann has been with Sentara since 1998 and has held his current position since 2001. Sentara has begun searching for its next CFO.
10. Houston Methodist appointed Anthony DeFurio as CFO in September. Mr. DeFurio previously served as CFO of Charlotte, N.C.-based Advocate Health. He succeeded Kevin Burns, who retired at the end of September.
11. In January, Chuck Robb, former senior vice president and CFO of Kansas City, Mo.-based Saint Luke's Health System, was named CFO of St. Louis-based BJC Health System. The appointment came on the heels of the Saint Luke's and BJC merger, which created a 28-hospital system.
12. Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Sanford Health appointed Scott Wooten CFO in January. Mr. Wooten succeeded Bill Marlette, who came out of retirement to fill Sanford's CFO position until Mr. Wooten was hired. Mr. Wooten previously served as CFO of Jacksonville, Fla.-based Baptist Health.
13. Julia Puchtler was named CFO of Philadelphia-based University of Pennsylvania Health System in July. Ms. Puchtler succeeded Keith Kasper, who will become chief administrative officer for the health system.
14. Cincinnati-based TriHealth named Todd Anderson as the health system's next CFO in November. Mr. Anderson served as CFO for Rockford, Ill.-based Mercyhealth, a seven-hospital system since 2020. From 2011 to 2020, he served as CFO of Kettering (Ohio) Health.
15. Portland-based MaineHealth appointed Richard Bayman as its next CFO. Mr. Bayman will begin the role in January. He succeeds Albert Swallow III, who is retiring after a decade in the role and 30 years with MaineHealth.
