David Nelson's 20-year career in healthcare finance spans the non- and for-profit sectors and a wide geographic area, spanning both rural and urban markets from Oregon to Missouri. He specializes in turning around underperforming hospitals and leading them through the transaction process.
In January, Springfield, Ill.-based Hospital Sisters Health System named Mr. Nelson CFO of its Western Wisconsin Division, which includes Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire, Wis., and St. Joseph's Hospital in Chippewa Falls, Wis. Fitch Ratings assigned an "AA-" rating on the 2,069-bed, 13-hospital system's overall debt in May 2012, noting its $1.99 billion in total revenue and 294 days cash on hand.
Mr. Nelson served most recently as the Wisconsin regional controller for St. Louis-based SSM Health Care. Before that, he held CFO roles in Illinois at St. Francis Hospital & Health Center of Blue Island, now known as MetroSouth Medical Center, and Mercy Health System based in Chicago.
He has taught at the University of Minnesota and Chicago's Rush University School of Health Management. He earned his bachelor's degree in accountancy from the University of Mississippi and his master's in healthcare administration from the University of Minnesota. The Healthcare Financial Management Association awarded him a Muncie Gold Merit Award for outstanding service.
