CEO Gary Colberg: Responsible for Southeast Georgia Health System's $24M Financial Turnaround

Gary R. Colberg, FACHE, has served as president and CEO of Brunswick-based Southeast Georgia Health System since March 2001. He has more than 35 years of healthcare leadership experience under his belt.

Colberg2When Mr. Colberg took the reins at SGHS, the system was losing more than $13 million each year. Under his leadership, it underwent a financial turnaround and was earning profits of more than $11 million in just 12 months, according to Healing a "Hospital: The Turnaround at Southeast Georgia Health System," a book written by David Herdlinger. The book highlights Mr. Colberg's strategy and leadership skills used during the $24 million turnaround.

Beyond the book chronicling the financial turnaround, Mr. Colberg has received much praise and recognition for his leadership skills and social service. In 2011, the Brunswick Chapter of The Links gave Mr. Colberg its inaugural Man of Distinction Award. Also in 2011, the Georgia Alliance of community Hospitals named him the CEO of the Year. He has also received the College of Coastal Georgia's Anthony A. Alaimo Award for Public Service from the College of Coastal Georgia, among many other awards.

Mr. Colberg is involved in healthcare organizations as well as the local community. For instance, he has served as a board member for the College of Coastal Georgia Foundation, the Coastal Bank of Georgia, the Coastal Georgia Regional Healthcare Network, the Voluntary Hospitals of America-Georgia Chapter and the Georgia Alliance of Community Hospitals.

Mr. Colberg earned a master's degree in community health administration from Vermont College of Norwich University in Montpelier, Vt.
